The Green Hornet Radio Show

I was reading an article on the Green Hornet recently, and did you know he was first created for the Green Hornet Radio Show? I assumed he was created for a comic, like Batman, Superman, etc. Actually, he first appeared on the radio way back in 1936, making him older than all of those other super heroes.

The radio station was Detroit station WXYZ, in Detroit, USA. You can find out more about the Green Hornet by reading that article I was talking about – check out the article about the Green Hornet Radio Show.

Most of us know the Green Hornet from the TV show or the recent movie starring Seth Rogen. The TV show was famous for introducing Bruce Lee to western audiences as Kato, the sidekick. Lee was so successful as the character that he became the star of the show, even more popular than Van Williams who played the title character and Britt Reid. In Asian countries the show was known as ‘The Kato Show’.

By the way, I was interested to read that on the Green Hornet radio show, Britt Reid was supposed to be the great nephew of the Lone Ranger. Both of these shows were played on the WXYZ station and created by Fran Striker.

Since then the Green Hornet Radio series, the Green Hornet has gone on to feature in film serials, novels, comics and of course the TV show and movie. He has a pretty impressive resume – not bad for someone over 80! Hopefully we haven’t seen the last  of this iconic character, but unfortunately his movie didn’t do particularly well.
